Handcrafted vs Mass-Produced Mirrors: How to Spot Quality

TL;DR

Quality signals: solid iron (not hollow), 3mm+ safety-backed glass (not thin unprotected), welded corners (not bolted), powder-coat finish (not paint), included hardware, and a warranty. If the seller can't answer these questions, walk away.

Two mirrors can look identical online. In person and over years of use, the difference between a well-made mirror and a mass-produced one is dramatic. Here are the six things to check before you buy.

1. Frame material

Good: solid iron (heavy, cold to the touch, precisely welded).
Bad: hollow tube, MDF with painted finish, cheap aluminum.

Pick it up. A well-made 48×28 iron-framed mirror weighs around 22 lb. If a similar-sized "iron" mirror weighs 8 lb, the frame is hollow — it'll dent, warp, and eventually fail.

2. Glass thickness & backing

Good: 3mm+ glass with a protective safety backing (a film adhered to the back that keeps shards contained if broken).
Bad: 2mm thin glass with no backing at all.

3. Corner construction

Good: welded corners with a clean seamless join.
Bad: bolted, screwed, or glued corners — these fail first as the mirror ages.

4. Finish

Good: powder-coated finish that resists scratches, rust, and humidity.
Bad: painted finish, which chips at the first bump.

5. Included hardware

Good: D-rings or French cleat pre-installed on the back, plus wall anchors rated for the mirror's weight.
Bad: "hardware sold separately" or single sawtooth hangers that can bend under load.

6. Warranty

Good: a minimum 1-year frame warranty against manufacturing defects.
Bad: "as-is" with no returns or replacements.

Our promise: Every Salkala Decor mirror uses 3mm safety-backed glass, welded solid iron frames, powder-coated finish, includes all hardware, and carries a 1-year warranty. See the full collection.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a mirror frame is solid or hollow?

Weight is the easiest test — a solid iron 48×28 arched mirror should weigh at least 20 lb. Anything under 12 lb at that size is almost certainly hollow. Also tap the frame; hollow frames sound tinny.

What does 'safety-backed glass' mean?

A thin protective film is adhered to the back of the mirror during manufacture. If the mirror ever breaks, the film keeps the shards contained rather than falling to the floor — the same principle as automotive glass.

Do welded corners really matter?

Long-term, yes. Welded corners are permanent; bolted corners loosen over years of humidity and temperature swings, causing the frame to sag or the mirror to sit crooked.
